Most well-written mission statements contain certain qualities that make them powerful. Following, in no particular order, are some of the qualities usually present in a well-crafted mission statement:
· A worthwhile aim.
· Genuine and lived.
· Gets people’s attention.
· Inspiring and descriptive.
· Provides a motivating force.
· Easy to read and understand.
· Reflects the company’s values.
· Compelling... bold and dynamic.
· Meaningful words... no buzz words.
· Uses verbs because verbs suggest action.
· Emphasizes the uniqueness of the company.
· Kindles excitement and fosters commitment.
· Captures the desired spirit of the company.
· Answers the question, why does the company exist?
· The statement is short; less than 10 words; easy to remember.
· Communicated often and found within any office of the company.
· Is comprehensive... focusing on more than one aspect of the company.
· Clarifies purpose and direction for the company (can be used to guide decision-making).
